CONSORZIO SOCIAL PURPOSES AND ACTIVITIES IN FAVOR OF THE DISTRICTS
The Consorzio is a cooperative ruled and disciplined by the mutuality principle, without any purposes of private speculation, and it has as its main purpose to carry out activities in favor of the Districts.
Therefore, it is its own nature that places it at the service of the Districts. This service consists in the filing and registration of everything it is retained worthy for the protection of images, coats of arms, emblems and everything else is part of the Districts and Palio’s heritage, with the purpose of ensuring their proper diffusion and protection.
From here stems not only the image and mark management, the accomplishment of financial operations and the proposition of onerous legal actions delegated by the Magistrate of the Districts, but also the search of initiatives aimed to the 17 Districts’ common interest.
The Consorzio places its own activity in favor of the Districts through the direct management of insurance policies such as Third party liability, accident insurance for participants and barbareschi (the person who has the task of taking care of the horses, there is one of them for each district), building fire and spill damage policy; of maximum interest is the accident policy for the contradaioli (people who belong to on of the 17 Districts) who are active in the institutional activities of the Districts or in aggregative contexts (activities for children, bursar’s office, social services).
In the recent decades the economic resources of the Consorzio have been made available to the Consorzio’s members through measures aimed at renewing the mounts for the historical parade built in 2000 for about £ 170.000.000 (€ 87.797,67), in addition to the acquisition of countless assets, such as tables, chairs or other furnishings for about € 286.000,00 in the decade from 2001 to 2011.
The attention aimed at culture and works of art was applied in 2011 with the acquisition and concession on loan to the Contrade of the original tables realized by the artist Duilio Cambelotti in the 30’s of the last century; valuable interpretations of characters in customs of each single District.
The purchase and possession of a building for warehouse use for the storage of the stages of the alleys owned by the Magistrato delle Contrade, can be considered a service rendered to the whole Contrade’s community.
The collaboration for the safeguarding of the Festivity and its realization with the organizing institution, the Municipality of Siena, was applied with a constant and annual economic commitment for the rental of the soprallassi (a type of parade horse); in 1993 the purchase of a specific chariot for the transport of horses injured during the activities of preparation or performance of the Palio was added and it was given in concession and for the use to the Municipal Administration.
